Detroit
Detroit is well known as the world's
automotive
capital. It has also been one of the world's reference points for popular, rock and nowadays,
electronic music too. These legacies are celebrated by the city's familiar nicknames:
Motor City, Rock City and Motown.
Home to the Big Three automobile companies, General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, there are hundreds
of offices and plants in the automotive support business: parts, electronics, and design suppliers.
The domestic auto industry accounts directly and indirectly for one out of every ten jobs in the
United States. The potential of networking with such contacts adds a powerful attraction to
delegates from North America, but especially for those from Europe, South America and the
Asia-Pacific region.
Entertainment:
Live music has been the dominant feature of Detroit's nightlife since the late 1940s, bringing the city to the attention of the world. The metropolitan area boasts three of the top live music venues in the United States - DTE Energy Music Theatre, The Palace of Auburn Hills and The Detroit Theatre District, the nation's second largest such venue. Many of the area's prominent museums are located in the historic cultural centre near Wayne State University. The important history of Detroit and the surrounding areas are displayed at The Henry Ford, the nation's largest indoor and outdoor museum complex.
Sports: Detroit has six professional teams in different sports disciplines, but a must-see is the Pistons in an NBA game. Check the calendar if you want to see them in action!
